Gabrielle Mendieta
In 2013, she graduated from the University of Houston with a degree in Philosophy and Creative Writing, where she primarily worked on short stories (fiction) until her last year before graduating when she progressively started moving towards flash fiction, prose poetry, and stream of consciousness writing, until encountering mail art and experimental writing as its own genre. Since then, her relationship with writing has been fundamentally established as a visual-object relationship.
Her need for this visual-object relationship with writing led her to question how a body acted and reacted in slam poetry and readings, causing her to question the role of a performer/interpreter. In 2015 she completed a year of body expression and theater in Escola de Teatro, Pábulo (Santiago de Compostela, ES) where she was re-aquainted with contemporary dance/body expression and started attending various dance academies as well as workshops with various dancers such as Janet Novás, Lucio Baglivo, Nadine Gerspacher, Lucas Condró, Maximiliano Sanford, Jurij Konjar, Matan David (GAGA method), and Sharon Fridman.
It was in 2017, upon receiving her MFA in Contemporary Art from Universidade de Vigo, Pontevedra, where she started to explore live art and visual poetry with respect to sculptures and ready-mades. During this time, she approached performance art both as its own artistic discipline as well as a means to protest binary gender roles, violence against women, and women's role within the art world. Since then, she has attended several performance art workshops from varying artists such as Alexandra Zierle, Ana Gesto, Xavier Le Roy, Martine Viale, Ana Matey, Javier Martín, and Isabel León.
Currently she is working on her doctoral thesis where she explores the relationship between dance and performance art in Universitat Politècnica de Valencia (Valencia, ES). Her thesis has led her to a research stay in Companhia Instável (Porto, PT) where she is also obtaining her diploma in interpretation and creative composition (FAICC) so as to develop a new movement notation.
