Gabrielle Mendieta

US/Colombia, 1990

Multidisciplinary artist whose work explores the limitations between live art and contemporary dance, movement notation and experimental writing, visual poetry and sculpture. Currently she is researching the relationship between dance and performance art, questioning both their limitations as well as exploring their meeting point.

SPACE

At what point is a stage necessary in dance?

When an artist dances in the street and has a surrounding crowd, does the public create a stage?

TIME

Is there a stage in live art? If so, when does it begin and how is it created?

Are all choreographies just another score of an action?

BODY

Are all gestures genuine, authentic movement, or are they simply a composite, a collection of learned imitations much like choreography?

What is authentic movement?

What moves me? Is it the space? Is it the object being used? Is it the body's necessity?
